Welcome, fam. We’re excited to announce the launch of the Abolitionist Education Collective.
Abolitionist Education Collective (AEC) is a resource hub for educators to learn, collaborate, strategize, and deepen their abolitionist praxis. We work to cultivate lasting alternatives to punishment and control, radically transform all learning spaces, and abolish the school-prison nexus.
We develop resources and facilitate learning spaces to identify, challenge, and transform practices that replicate prisons, policing, and carceral logics in the spaces where we learn. We defend educators facing repression and retaliation. We invest in abolitionist education infrastructure. We support educators to organize within and beyond schools.
In our effort to advance abolitionist education, AEC seeks to embody six core values:
Freedom – the experience of living a life of dignity, being in right relationship with the land and other living beings, and having the time and space to learn, dream, and be in this world without the looming threat of violence.
Self-Determination – the ability to engage in collective decision-making to determine what is most aligned with our communities and fight to protect our land, people, languages, knowledge, and ways of being.
Care and Healing – the practice of consensually tending to the physical, emotional, and spiritual needs of a community, preserving dynamic networks of support, and ensuring people have the resources they most need and desire.
Collaborative Problem Solving – the process of identifying and defining communal concerns, sharing and discussing possibilities, and working cooperatively to implement critical and creative strategies to address community needs.
Community Safety – the shared responsibility to value, protect, and support each other, collective access to quality food and water, housing, healthcare, and education, and ongoing embodied commitment to interdependence and accountability.
Radical Transformation of our Conditions – the act of restructuring our material realities by challenging existing power relations, building life-affirming infrastructure, and working in solidarity with oppressed peoples across the globe.
In the coming months, we will be launching timely and urgently-needed programs and opportunities for educators to connect and build together, including Abolitionist Education Workshops, a Student & Educator Solidarity Fund, and more.
